My first camera

My name is luke and i'm a beginner film maker. i made my first film in college and enjoyed it so much i've written a second short film. but now ive left college i got to pay for my stuff out my own pocket! so i'm about to buy my own camera. after some looking with my friend we decided on the Canon MVX330i MINI DV CAMCORDER for about ?550 GBP. so i was just wondering if any of you veterans could help me buy telling me is this a good camera to start with. or if you know better cameras for round the same price.

P.S. im also want to get a separate mic to fit into the camera to improve the sound. can this be done on this Canon?

For starters you should shop around!

As for the tech spec, it says it has a microphone and a headphone terminal (minijack I would assume).

I recently got a Canon MV830i for ?300 which is a similar camcorder (non-megapixel, no mic or headphone socket) and I have been very pleased with it. Reminds me of my Chinon and Elmo days.

My other two tips would be buy a lens cloth and skylight (UV) filter (to protect the lens more than anything ...) and with the ?150 you save from shopping around buy some more battery packs. And some blank tapes.

Incidentally, I was in Costco today and the MiniDV tapes are ?18 for 10 JVC. I haven't seen them anywhere cheaper thus far...
